A long-awaited hotpot night, and we picked Da Hong Pao this time. Overall a satisfying experience, especially when it came to the freshness of the seafood — genuinely impressive. Seafood Platter — Ocean-Fresh. The seafood platter was a showstopper. Beautifully styled with a pink folding fan, dried branches, and giant clam shells as decoration — visually it already won half the battle. The geoduck was the star: translucent, crunchy, and naturally sweet without a hint of fishiness. Seriously fresh. The salmon sashimi was glossy and vibrantly orange, and the abalone was scored with delicate knife work. Top marks for presentation and quality. Oysters — Plump & Juicy. The oysters were equally impressive — each one fat, plump, and bursting with that clean briny sweetness. A quick dip in the hotpot to lock in the juices and they were incredible. Beef Trio — Great Quality, Small Portion. The three cuts of beef showed beautiful marbling, with clean snowflake patterns running through each slice. A few seconds in the broth was all it took — tender, buttery, and full of flavour. The only catch? The portion was a bit on the small side. A few chopstick rounds and it was gone. Definitely recommend ordering an extra serve if you've got a hungry table. Dumplings — All Delicious, Crab Dumpling Steals the Show. Every dumpling we tried was excellent — thin skins, generous fillings — but the crab dumpling was the clear MVP. Each bite delivered a rich, concentrated crab flavour that lingered. Worth ordering twice. Soup Base — A Slightly Awkward Moment. We went with the coconut & five-finger fig root (五指毛桃) soup base. The ingredients looked solid and the broth came out a milky white. But here's the odd part — the staff brought out the coconut and asked us to pour the coconut water into the pot ourselves. Not sure if it was meant to be a "guest interaction" feature or just a missed step in service. Felt a little strange, especially at this price point where you'd expect the staff to handle the full prep before serving. Seating & Atmosphere. The seating was genuinely comfortable — plenty of space, no squeezing elbows with neighbours. Lighting was warm and moody, perfect for a relaxed catch-up dinner. Big plus here. Verdict - Fresh seafood, excellent dumplings, comfy seating - Beef portion runs small, soup base service felt a bit off Still a recommend overall. Next visit, I'd try a different soup base to see if there's another hidden gem on the menu. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: $500+
