I was looking for a coffee centric cafe (in this city of cafes!) focussing on beans. I found this place and took my family there. A number of things stand out. 1) the coffee is excellent. I’m definitely not an expert, but I am also not a newb. I come from multiple cities with abundant third wave coffee options, and enough bar drinks and pour overs downed over the years. I prefer my coffee black, hand pour ideally. The owner knows what he is doing. He had over 8 different beans available to choose from, and each roasted there. This is better than most third wave coffee shops I’ve encountered in the US. I ordered an Ethiopian Yergacheffe naturally processed coffee, and boy was it good. I tasted notes of blueberry, stone fruits, grass, and a long finish of glazed yeasted donut. I loved it. I just had really, really good coffee. If you want a beautiful cup that makes your day, check this one out. 2) the hours. In Korea I struggle to find a decent coffee shop that opens in the early hours. I think cafe culture here serves the function of a social experience, maybe less the wake up in the morning function. The only options are Starbucks type places, or a take out stand churning out (watery) iced americanos en masse. This cafe opens at 6.A.M. 6am!!! I cant actually remember the last time I found a place to get a decent cup at this hour. Its difficult to find elsewhere too. While i dont know if this is a sustainable option for the owner to run a cafe like this from 6am to 11pm, at 7am as i write this before i head out to get my morning cup, I’m grateful. 3) the owner. He is young. I dont know his name. But I got passion, dedication and the kind of engagement with his customers that made me smile. While i was there my family, a patron with a laptop, and a man who looked like he was also traveling, and a lady came by. Except for the laptop man our owner tended to each patron like a friend. Chatting about his beans, making recommendations about drinks, what was happening with everyone’s day in the moment. Not heavy handed, like some really coffee centric shops that want to flood you with information, but a nice banter. We had a chat about my homebrew set up, what he was doing with his cafe. He made me an extra cup with a special blend he was working on. I bought some of the Yergacheffe, and he also offered another roast from Peru that i picked up on the sheer merit of this highly enjoyable conversation. If you want to sit down and just pound a cup get the hell out, or hunker down and put in some hours on the laptop this matters less. But for a traveller, i enjoyed the owner’s demeanor and his gentle conversation and humanity, and I’ll think of his small shop tucked into a tiny street every cup i sip back at home. 3) the other stuff. he makes his pastries from scratch himself! He had a big saucepan with melted butter going, was getting flour out from the storage bench in the center of the shop, and was cooking when i stepped in. We tried the lemon madeleine and a banana financier type treat. My kids got a strawberry milk made from fresh local strawberries. All fresh and delicious. My parents got a some bar drinks, with tight beautiful foam and a straight forward but well done leaf. It was all solid. Granted, if you wanted the best pastry around, the most extravagant latte art to put on your gram, complex and multi ingredient sweet drink etc, thats not what this shop focusses on. But what he does he does really well. 4) ambience. If you like simple, mid century forward aesthetics and an airy space with open walls and excellent natural light, this is a good place to sit and sip. Some exposed concrete. That slightly industrial storage bench that occupies most of the floor next to a leather couch. I dont know what it transforms into at night. I could easily see it put on some LPs and turn into a sound bar with moodier lighting. But for day dwellers like me, it was perfect. I especially liked the font chosen for the store logo. Highly recommend! Price per person: ₩1–10,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
