Santi is brilliant. Cooked for us on 3 occasion. Delicious. We met him at the fisherman pier and brought the fresh fish back to him. Usually done on a motorbike. He built the rope ferry across the creek which I repaired for some German tourists. They bought me a beer in thanks. Price per person: ฿1–200 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

We were staying at Baba Eco Lodge for 7 nights and, rather than eating at the hotel restaurant every evening, decided to try a few local spots. Walking past The Bar, it looks fairly unassuming, but the owner Santi came out to say hello and immediately piqued our interest. Each day, his friends bring him freshly caught local fish. He showed us the options, snapper, grouper, squid and more, and we chose a grouper to be cooked later that evening. Santi cooks and serves everything himself, so don’t come expecting fast service. This is true beach shack dining. Bring patience, a good mood, and time. He also loves making cocktails and is more than happy to help you choose one. The food was genuinely excellent, especially given the remote location. Spice levels can be adjusted to taste, and everything felt fresh and thoughtfully cooked. What made it really special was at the end of our first visit, when we asked if he could prepare some more local or regional dishes for us. He suggested local sea snails and two different curries made with a nationally famous pink shrimp paste produced on the island. We happily agreed and came back two nights later for round two, which was just as good as expected. While not my personal favourite, he also cooks a very solid Pad Thai. Don’t visit this part of the island without stopping in to see Santi at least once. A real gem. Price per person: ฿400–600 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
