My experience at Nama at Amanpuri can be described as memorable. Unfortunately it was horribly memorable. To set some context, one would usually not seek Japanese food in Phuket, but I was charmed by photos of the omakase experience set against a scenic tropic backdrop. Reservation was made via email - very smooth, very responsive. Upon arrival, the waitress asked whether we would like to be seated outside or inside. We requested counter for omakase. Only then were we told that the our 6pm reservation made in the morning was not for omakase but for à la carte. At this point, the manager intervened to explain omakase reservations are required to be made 6 hours in advance. Not sure what difference 6 hours can make, however the real issue was that this wasn’t communicated nor offered as an option when confirming the email booking. Why did the reservation team assume à la carte when the website states omakase sittings are 6pm and 8:30pm? The manager then proceeded to explain that 6 hours notice is required for omakase as ‘the items are exclusively selected by the chef and not available on the menu’. Being Asian this was quite entertaining as I personally wouldn’t have the ignorance to lecture a white man on the components of a tasting menu. My friend explained we were familiar with the basic concept of omakase as we live in Asia and have been to Japan prompting a battle of travel accomplishments from the manager. Nonetheless, at this point we were tired and decided to keep the reservation as the quickest form of resolution. The à la carte menu was simple and limited giving hope of quality and refinement. We ordered few items to ensure we could leave as quickly as possible and in return received food presented as sloppily as possible. I’d have thought a restaurant with no omakase bookings at 6pm and just two occupied tables might be motivated to accommodate customers (even if not hotel guests). Instead we were graciously offered a complimentary dessert as an apology when we asked for the bill. No thanks, please don’t try to make me stay longer. Tips for future guests: be sure to specify omakase with at least 6 hour notice when making booking. On the bright side, à la carte guests still enjoy a sense of exclusivity as you’ll almost have the entire restaurant to yourselves. Price per person: ฿2,000+ Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2

Such a beautiful resort, but we had the worst experience in this restaurant! We weren't allowed the omakase menu or even allowed to look inside at the counter despite us having booked in advanced... apparently you must specify that you want this when booking and it was not mentioned to us by the reservations team. Many problems ensued... The menu was very hotel generic and only had a small selection of fish, but the sashimi was high quality. 6500bht got us two different salads and a sashimi selection.... Sashimi prawn was served cooked and had little bits of shell on it. The white male manager was explaining to me and my asian friend what the word omakase means and telling us he had been to Japan, which was just surreal. It was extra funny because I had only just come from Japan and he seemed to know very little. When we told him we knew he got quite defensive and competitive. I don't think these people understand hospitality. The waiters didnt really speak English but tried to introduce the menu... we politely listened to them slowly say "these are the starters" and then point to the word starter on the menu... the man continued reading out parts of the English menu to us with no extra detail... I was starting to loose my temper. We were given a small green tea to start (it had not been whisked, so was lumpy), I had not even finished mine when it was taken and we were not offered any more or any other drinks. The mansplaining manager offered us a free dessert to apologize for us not being able to have the omakase, we declined and got the hell out, never to return. interested in the omakase, however the website lacks required information so i contacted them asking about the omakase through thir "make an enquiry" web form. Recieved no response. To me that says a lot. If you are either too disorganised or pretentious to show on the website what the restaurant offers or reply to customer queries then maybe it is best avoided anyway.
