Tucked away near a food court in Festival walk, this Asam chicken rice store claiming to be high quality is not at all in even basic standards. The kaya toast took an astonishing 40~ minutes to arrive, even though for others who came later it seemed quicker for them. A particular staff member, attempting to get it to my table, I saw literally asking all the other tables first if it was them, like can’t you check the little receipt? So I told the waitress and she just slammed the dish on the table The others were nice but- really? Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $50–100 Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Asam Hainan Chicken – Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong Located at the corner of the food court in Festival Walk, Asam can be a little confusing to find, as three restaurants under the same group are clustered together. After a short wait of about a minute, I was seated at a table for one. Ordering is done by scanning a QR code, which is straightforward and efficient. I opted for the mini Hainan chicken with rice (HK$48) accompanied by a Nanyang style coffee. The waiting time was around 8–10 minutes. The coffee arrived first, piping hot and served in a pre warmed cup – a thoughtful touch achieved by rinsing the cup with hot water. It was rich, smooth, and sweetened with condensed milk, very much in line with the traditional Nanyang style. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The rice was presented neatly, with a reasonable portion size. The rice itself was fragrant, well flavoured, and the texture was perfect. The chicken was boneless and tender, though clearly prepared from frozen rather than fresh, so the flavour was very mild rather than distinctive. For the mini portion, I received about 6-7 pieces, which seemed fair value. I am unsure how many pieces are served in the standard size. The dish was accompanied by two slices of cucumber and the classic trio of sauces: sweet dark soy, chilli, and ginger with oil. Overall, Asam delivers a decent and convenient version of Hainan chicken rice at a fair price point. The highlight for me was the coffee, which was authentic and satisfying. The chicken itself is serviceable, though not remarkable, but together with the rice and sauces it makes for a balanced and enjoyable quick meal.
