Ban Tarnchevee Cafe is simply not worth the 1 hour 45 minute drive from Chiang Mai, and what surprised me most was the apparent lack of concern for basic hygiene and food handling standards. I'll admit that the setting is pleasant enough—a small cafe beside a running stream with some nice photo opportunities—and the drinks and desserts were good. However, social media makes this place look far more special than it actually is. The architecture is nothing extraordinary, and once you've taken a few photos, there really isn't much else here that justifies making a special trip. What most TikTok and Instagram posts fail to mention is the journey. The final 45 minutes involve a narrow, winding mountain road that can be genuinely stressful to drive, with sections barely wide enough for two vehicles and steep drops alongside parts of the route. By the time we arrived, it was hard not to wonder how a cafe with such a limited offering had become such a destination. Seating is very limited, everything is self-service, and to top it off, the cafe's toilets were locked, with guests directed to a rustic outdoor bathroom several minutes away that was filled with insects and bugs. The biggest issue, however, was the number of stray dogs freely roaming in and out of the cafe. These were street dogs that could be seen lying on the roadside one moment and then wandering through the cafe and resting underneath customers' tables the next. I was genuinely shocked to see this and even more shocked that hardly anyone seems to mention it. Allowing stray animals to move freely around an establishment where food and drinks are being prepared raises serious questions about hygiene, cleanliness, and food handling practices. For me, no amount of scenery or social media hype can outweigh those concerns, and I left feeling that this was one of the most overrated attractions around Chiang Mai. Service: 1

If you are looking for a truly cozy place to unwind and enjoy a slow pace away from city noise, Ban Tarnchevee Homestay is my absolute go-to when I visit Chiang Mai. Located near Chiang Dao, about a 1.5-hour drive from the city, it is incredibly hard to find a place with this kind of peaceful vibe. At just 850 THB per person, the value is amazing. This price includes both a comforting breakfast and a fantastic Northern Thai dinner spread. The staff here are incredibly kind and helpful, making the whole experience feel less like a hotel and more like you are just visiting a friend's place. The setting is perfect for disconnecting. You can sit out on the wooden decks, relax, and listen to the cascading stream right next to you. The climate is quite cold here all year round, even in the summer, which is super refreshing. At night, the property lights up with warm string lights, creating a magical, quiet, and atmospheric vibe in the forest. A few tips for your stay: • Stay a night or two: They do have a cafe if you just want to drop by during the day, but I highly recommend staying for a night or two to fully soak it in. Because of the secluded location, it's not the most convenient spot to use as a base for traveling around, so it's best enjoyed as a destination to just stop and relax. • Pack light: You need to park on the public road and walk quite a long way downhill to reach the property. Bring a backpack with what you need and leave your heavy luggage in the car or back in the city! • Embrace nature: Since you are right in the middle of the forest, expect to see some bugs—it's completely normal for the environment. Just be sure not to bring food into your bedroom to keep them out of your sleeping space.
