Been here a few times already. Their banh mi is definitely one of the best in town. But my favourite has to be the pork skewer, juicy and properly seasoned Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

First time here and it definitely won’t be my last. I’m already planning to go back in a few days after my trip to China. I ordered the special cold cut sandwich and paid for extra pâté—and it really shows. They do not skimp on the filling; the sandwich was packed to the brim. The extra pâté made it even more indulgent and delicious. The baguette was thick and crunchy without being hard to bite into, and the inside was soft and tender. Everything came together perfectly. Honestly, Kiki Phung makes it feel like you don’t even need to go to Vietnam for an authentic experience! I went about 30 minutes before closing, and the food was still fresh, nothing tasted old or stale. There were only a few people ahead of me, but this is definitely a place I’d be willing to line up for. Everyone working in the store was very friendly as well. Bánh Mì Nếm presents a compelling narrative in Hong Kong's culinary landscape: a humble store catapulted to the Michelin Guide (not Michelin star or Bib Gourmand) within a year. Its reputation precedes it, often hailed as the city's most authentic portal to the vibrant streets of Vietnam—a claim I was eager to verify. Fortunately, there was no queue when I visited. I was pleasantly surprised to find owner Kiki chatting with Mr. Koo, a tattoo artist I know. Having seen their interactions online, this chance encounter only heightened my anticipation. I ordered simply: their Special Bánh Mì. At $82 HKD, it sits at the premium end for this street food staple, which naturally sets high expectations. I’d heard a key piece of intel beforehand—they pre-assemble sandwiches in bulk and toast them to order. Knowing they bake their bread fresh in-house, I found this method somewhat disappointing. It means missing the baguette at its absolute prime, straight from the oven, and risks over-toasting. Unfortunately, that’s precisely what occurred. The baguette was uncommonly hard. I routinely employ the classic trick of compressing the bánh mì in its bag to ease eating, but even then, the crust proved stubborn. It lacked the signature contrast of a shatteringly crisp exterior and a soft, airy, fluffy interior that defines a great Vietnamese loaf. I also noted several practical choices that seemed to prioritize appearance over ease of eating. The carrots, radish, and cucumber are cut into thick batons rather than a fine julienne, creating an impressively tall profile but causing fillings to overflow. This is topped with a very generous handful of coriander—perhaps too much—and the baguette is cut at a steep angle, leaving the bottom half wider than the top. The result is a beautiful, messy handful that proves challenging to eat without ingredients escaping. Yet, within this imperfect vessel, the core flavors resonated. The pâté was deep and generously applied, the Vietnamese mayo rich, and the whisper of pork floss added a compelling texture. That said, sourcing quality cold cuts is the simpler part of the equation. The soul of a bánh mì lies in its bread—the foundational element that Bánh Mì Nếm, for all its acclaim, has yet to perfect. All in all, I’m genuinely proud of what Kiki has built and the recognition she’s earned so quickly. There is a great foundation here, and the potential is palpable. I’m hopeful that with refinement, especially concerning the bread, this spot can fully deliver on its promise. For now, it remains a compelling venture with a great story. 3.5/5 Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4
