KOPI CHAMPION Bao Er’s Fortune Centre outlet delivers a mixed but memorable experience. Visiting on a Saturday afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised that the café was not crowded, and we were seated almost immediately. The star of the meal was the hor fun, beautifully kissed by wok hei, with a deep charred aroma that lingered pleasantly. The luncheon meat fried rice, however, lacked character and fell below expectations. A surprising standout was the kopi—rich, robust and genuinely shiok, —arguably the best coffee I’ve had in a small, humble café setting. The compact space is charming enough, though inadequate ventilation leaves diners carrying a smoky reminder of their visit.

If giving –10 stars were possible, Bao Er Cafe (Middle Road) would earn it effortlessly. This place is the definition of not caring. My wife ordered Hokkien noodles takeaway with two crystal-clear, non-negotiable instructions explicitly communicated. NO pork lard. NO chilli. She is recovering from a sore throat with throat blisters. What arrived was the exact opposite: Pork lard mixed throughout the noodles. Ground red chilli sauce fully stirred into the dish, not even on the side. At that point, the food was completely inedible. Not “less spicy.” Not “minor mistake.” Straight-up disregard for the order. And then there’s the quality — or lack of it: - Meat portion was pathetic, almost comical - Prawns were mushy, soft, and lifeless, the kind that makes you question how long they’d been sitting around - Texture was soggy, flavours were flat, and the entire dish screamed zero pride, zero standards This wasn’t a kitchen under pressure. This was a business that simply doesn’t care what it serves or who it serves it to. If you have dietary requirements, health considerations, or even basic expectations of food safety and quality — do not eat here. If you value your money, your time, or your appetite — go literally anywhere else. Bao Er Cafe (Middle Road) is not worth the inconvenience, not worth the gamble, and absolutely not worth a second chance. Avoid. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
