Beard Papa's is a Japanese cream puff chain with a small number of locations in Hong Kong, and this one sits on Queen's Road East in Wan Chai inside QRE Plaza. The concept is simple and focused. They make choux pastry puffs and fill them to order with your choice of cream, and that narrow focus is exactly what makes the product work when it is done right. The puffs themselves are light and airy with a thin shell that has just enough structure to hold together without being tough or dry. The filling gets piped in fresh when you order, which matters more than it might seem. The custard cream is the classic option and the one we come back for. It is smooth, lightly sweet, and not so rich that one feels like too much. The pistachio and coconut flavors are both worth trying if you want to go beyond the standard. The chocolate puff is a solid choice as well, straightforward and satisfying. The format here is takeaway focused. There is no real seating to speak of and the shop is compact, so most people order and move on. The puffs are best eaten immediately. They are the kind of thing that does not travel particularly well once the cream has been piped in, so eating on the spot or nearby is the right call. The experience is not without inconsistency. A few visits have produced puffs that were underfilled or shells that did not have the same crunch as the best versions. When it is on, though, it is genuinely good, and the Wan Chai location is convenient enough to make a quick stop easy if you are already in the area.

I like a good puff and got curious about a place that specializes in them exclusively. There is a reasonable amount of choices - I took the chocolate one. The filling was quite satisfying and I enjoyed it. The puff itself was rather soft. Maybe that was the intention but I expected a firm french-like puff. I also don't think it works well with the softness and creamebess of the filling. I am glad that I tried and I am grateful for the experience. Not sure it is something I will repeat.
