It’s always a win when you find a spot in Hong Kong that actually lets you hear yourself think. I recently dropped by Black Bear for a casual meal, and while the vibe is low-key and quiet, perfect for a real conversation, and the food definitely held its own. To really lean into that "Instagrammable" aesthetic, the wooden decor at Black Bear isn't just about the furniture, it is about the warm, organic textures that make the food colors pop. The restaurant uses a light, honey-toned wood (likely oak or ash) for its tables and serving trays. This choice is intentional: light wood reflects soft ambient light much better than dark mahogany, which helps brighten your food photos without needing a harsh flash. Minimalist Vibe: The clean lines of the wooden trays (like the one used for the Warabi Mochi) create a "Zen" frame around the dish, giving your photos a structured, professional look. In terms of food, the Black Bear Breakfast was the star of the show. It is a generous plate featuring a perfectly crisped "croffle" (croissant-waffle hybrid) dusted with powdered sugar, paired with some seriously juicy sausages, silky scrambled eggs, and a fresh side salad. It’s that ideal mix of sweet and savory that hits the spot for a lazy brunch. The King Prawn Linguine with Tomato Sauce was a solid pasta dish. The prawns were plump and well-cooked, and the sauce had a nice brightness to it. It’s plated beautifully with a few cherry tomatoes and microgreens. A choice if you're craving something hearty but refined. The Udon Noodle Soup with Sliced Beef didn’t exactly look like a 5-star dish. The presentation is a bit "homestyle," but once you actually dive in, it tastes perfectly fine. The broth is savory, the beef is tender, and the noodles have a decent chew. It’s comfort food, pure and simple. Ended the meal with the Matcha with Warabi Mochi. The matcha is whisked to a nice froth, and the Warabi Mochi has that perfect, soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture covered in kinako powder. It’s a light, refreshing way to end the meal. The coffee shop is spacious and features appealing interiors. I relished the espresso tonic along with the dark chocolate cake. The service was prompt. They also offer lunch options; however, it seems that the majority of patrons visit primarily for coffee. Most tables accommodate two people, making it suitable for informal coffee meetings. I used to visit this store at least once or twice a week with my laptop. I truly enjoyed spending time there because I found the environment comfortable, and the owner was always very friendly and accommodating. I especially appreciated that I was allowed to use a power outlet for my laptop, which made the store a convenient and welcoming place for me to work. Because of these positive experiences, your restaurant became one of my regular spots, and I even recommended it to many of my friends. However, during my recent visits, I was treated in a way that was very upsetting. Some staff members informed me that customers are never allowed to use the power outlets, which contradicts my previous experiences. In addition, I was told that I could not sit at my preferred seating area. The attitude of the staff was quite rude and unfriendly, which made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I understand that store policies may change, and I fully respect your right to set rules for your business. However, I hope that staff members can communicate such policies in a more polite and professional manner. As a long-time and loyal customer, this experience was very disappointing.
