Two of us booked a long-tailed boat from Rawai Beach to Koh Bon (Bon island) for 9am at a cost of 1200 baht round trip, returning at 3pm. The journey is relatively short, around 10 minutes, but very scenic. On arrival we were the only tourists on the island. We felt a little like Robinsoe Crusoe and Man Friday, isolated, but in a good kind of way. We spent the first couple of hours exploring the beach, looking for crabs amongst the rock pools and soaking in the wonderful views. More tourists started arriving after 10am and around 1130 we called into the Bon Island Restaurant for lunch. The restaurant is basically a big shack with wooden tables and plastic chairs, nothing fancy. We checked out the prices, probably 10% higher than good restaurants across the water at Rawai Beach. We opted for fish, Jack fish in particular, and we also ordered som tum to go along with it. The fish we chose ourselves, freshly caught the night before. We opted to just have it fried and the kitchen did a very good job, it was cooked to perfection. Chunky, firm pieces of fish with just a touch of saltiness and a hint of sweetness, excellent. The somtum complimented the fish nicely. For the two dishes and a couple of small Leo beers we paid 820 baht, excellent value considering the location. After lunch we lounged on the beach chairs for an hour (100 baht rental each) and then spent the remainder of our time swimming before heading back. Bon island and the restaurant make for a relaxing and enjoyable day trip, highly recommended. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ฿400–500 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
