After a highly mediocre first encounter with Buff at their Prince Edward branch back during the Easter holiday, I honestly didn't think I'd give the brand another shot. My initial visit left a lot to be desired from a grueling 30-minute wait for a bland lobster sauce fusilli to an icy, deeply unwelcoming reception from a rather annoyed cashier. Needless to say, my friend's recommendation hadn't lived up to the hype. However, a mid-afternoon work break recently brought me to their Quarry Bay branch on Hoi Kwong Street, and I'm glad to report a much needed redemption arc. Stepping in around 3:30 PM for tea time, the vibe here was a complete 180. The café was relatively quiet, peaceful and seats were readily available, making it the perfect sanctuary to unwind during a hectic hot workday. One key difference to note is that this branch does charge a 10% service charge (unlike the Prince Edward location), but the smoother, more relaxed experience made it feel far more justified. This time, I opted for the squid pasta with spicy rosé sauce ($128). While my previous pasta experience at Buff was a flavourless disappointment, this dish completely turned things around: It was served pipping hot, exactly as it should be. The spicy rosé sauce was the absolute highlight - thick, incredibly flavourful and perfectly clinging to the pasta with just the right amount of kick. If my first visit to Buff was a one-star fluke, their Quarry Bay branch proved that location really matters. While it hits your wallet slightly harder with the service charge, the quality of the food and the tranquil afternoon environment make this specific branch well worth a visit. finally tracked down this viral curly pasta and best french toast in hk! came with a friend and we were both blown away. the fusilli lunghi bucati in lobster bisque sauce? absolute dream. rich, creamy, addictive- i’d eat this every single day. the squid spaghetti in rose sauce was solid too, just a tad sweet for me. but the black sugar french toast? MUST ORDER even when ur stuffed. trust meeee. matcha coconut & seaweed calamari were v good too. tiramisu wasn’t “authentic” tho (lots of whipped cream, not our fav), can skip!
