Came here with a friend for a quick dinner, sad to say that this was perhaps the worst meal I've ever had in a very long time. Definetly the worst meal I've had in Central and it hurts me to say this as I've never really gave such a bad review. I have always walked past this place hoping to try it as they have two items which I love, Hainanese chicken rice and laksa. So when the perfect time came to try it, the meal was such a letdown that I decided that I probably wouldn't give it another try. The signature dish here is the Hainanese chicken rice. I believe they call this place ikon because their chicken rice is iconic? Not too sure. Anyways, my friend and I were the only customers so the food came to us real fast. We got three sauces, the black sweet soy sauce, chilli, and ginger. I believe this was supposed to imitate the Singapore style, as it served laksa as well. I've posted a picture of what we got, we also got a side of soup with carrots and corn. To best sum up the chicken rice, it was very bland. Lacking in flavour. Whilst the rice held itself in a clump like mound my friend could instantly tell that the rice was quite mushy. Mind you we didn't talk about the food until we both left and both agreed it was terrible. The rice was barely lukewarm and the rice and the chicken was cold. In fact, my friend mentioned that the chicken was cold to the point where it's gelatinous coating had formed. For myself, the chicken absolutely lacked flavour, the rice, whilst I could smell a hint of garlic, the rice itself wasn't very fragrant and tasted like sticky rice. The chicken was absolutely flavourless by itself and this was exacerbated by the temperature. In fact, I had to dip it into the hot soup in hopes that it would impart some flavour, but alas it was a failure. In fact the whole meal was so flavourless we ended up dousing the rice in all of the sauce. In terms of the sauce, the sweet soy was very liquid like, almost watery in texture, I believe the Singapore version is more viscous. The chilli was not spicy and the ginger was average. The soup was exactly the same as the one my mother had made the other day, carrots and sweetcorn probably boiled with pork bone, of course it would be unfair to compare my mother's cooking to this takeaway joint, so I won't. All in all, I was severely disappointed by the quality of the food here, whilst I usually would return to the same place once more after a not so great experience, I am afraid that I won't be returning to this one, service was fast (though we were the only customers) . But what a shame... Maybe the restaurant had a bad day, who knows.
