Despite its name, Changthong Farm functions more like a small zoo than a farm. My impression is that it may originally have been a ranch, which was later opened to public visits as an additional source of income. Over time, more animals seem to have been added to attract visitors, and it has gradually evolved into what it is today. The entrance fee is remarkably low — only 20 baht per person, which makes the place very accessible, especially for families. Inside, there is also a coffee shop and a souvenir shop, although I didn’t use either of them during my visit. The variety of animals is quite broad. Visitors can see parrots, monkeys, tortoises, rabbits and hares, ostriches, rheas, elephants, horses, lions, tigers, goats, chickens, roosters, zebras, and more. As with most zoos, the enclosures or designated areas for the animals are not very large, and it’s clear that the animals are not truly happy in captivity. That said, this is unfortunately a reality shared by zoos all over the world, not something unique to this place. From what I observed, it is possible to ride an elephant or a horse, although I’m not sure whether there is an extra fee for these activities. Some animals can also be fed by visitors under supervision, which seems to be done with safety in mind. One thing the place does well is comfort for visitors. There are many benches and picnic tables spread throughout the area, most of them well shaded, which makes walking around and taking breaks quite convenient. There is also a small lake, which adds a pleasant atmosphere and softens the overall environment. While walking around, I noticed that many of the other visitors were families with children. The kids, in particular, seemed genuinely happy to see and interact with the animals, which is probably one of the main reasons people choose to visit a place like this. Overall, Changthong Farm offers an inexpensive and accessible experience with a wide range of animals, especially appealing to families with children. At the same time, like all zoos, it raises unavoidable questions about animal captivity. It’s a place best approached with realistic expectations — neither idealized nor dismissed outright.
