If you are looking for an authentic Indonesian culinary escape in the heart of Taichung, Cafe Kenangan (located at No. 190, Lvchuan West St) is a must-visit. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere filled with quirky decor and a welcoming vibe sets the stage for a truly genuine experience. 1. The Food The star of the show was undoubtedly the Ayam Goreng Serundeng paired with Nasi Uduk. This wasn't just a meal, it was a trip back to Indonesia. • The Chicken: The fried chicken achieved that perfect, elusive balance: an incredibly crispy exterior with tender, juicy meat on the inside. The serundeng (grated coconut flakes) added that signature savory crunch that defines the dish. • The Rice: Choosing the Nasi Uduk (coconut rice) was the right move. It was fragrant and rich, acting as the perfect base for the bold flavors of the chicken. • The Sambal: No Indonesian meal is complete without it, and the sambal here is the real deal. It provided that authentic kick and depth of flavor that feels exactly like a home-cooked meal. • The Extras: The colorful kerupuk (crackers) and fresh cucumber slices provided a great textural contrast to the rich, fried elements of the plate. 2. The interior is fun and nostalgic, featuring "warung-style" wall art and quotes that add to the "Nongkrong" (hanging out) culture the cafe promotes. Whether you’re an Indonesian expat craving a taste of home or a local looking to explore authentic Southeast Asian flavors, this spot hits all the right notes. 3. Final Verdict Cafe Kenangan delivers 100% on originality and taste. Between the fantastic Ayam Serundeng and the stellar service, it is easily one of the best spots for Indonesian comfort food in Taichung. I’ll definitely be back to try the Bakso or Bebek next! 4.
