Just as Japan has Wagyu, Korea has Hanwoo. While Hanwoo is easy to find anywhere, seeking out a Hanwoo butcher restaurant in rural areas is an excellent choice. Not only is the meat incredibly fresh, but the prices are also very reasonable. Butcher restaurants only charge for the table setting, and at this restaurant, it’s just 8,000 KRW (6 USD) per table—such a bargain! The quality and portion of the meat are both fantastic. They also provide Seonji-guk (선지국), a traditional Korean soup made with ox blood curds. The blood is cooked and solidified into soft, tofu-like chunks, which are then added to a light, clear broth. The soup is often seasoned with garlic, green onions, and sometimes radish or bean sprouts, giving it a mild and savory flavor. Despite the richness of the ox blood, the soup served here was surprisingly light and clear, with a clean taste that complemented the freshness of the Hanwoo meat. It was really delicious!
