Located on Des Voeux Road Central in Central, Chocolux occupies a historic ground-floor space that was originally established in 1967 for The Siberian Fur Store and designed by a British architect. Stepping inside reveals a vintage, artistic ambiance defined by impressively high ceilings and an eclectic centerpiece: an open-access piano complete with a Schirmer's Library Sonatina album for musically inclined patrons to play. Despite high expectations sparked by glowing Instagram reviews, a recent afternoon catch-up over tea with a friend yielded a somewhat mediocre and overpriced experience for the quality offered. While some Google Maps reviews warned of bad service, the staff weren't rude, but rather chilled out and focused on their own tasks, such as assembling their signature cookie pizzas behind the counter. The highlight of the menu selection proved to be a mix of subtle successes and notable disappointments. For beverage options, two $55 hot 8 oz signature drinks were ordered: the Dirty Chocolate Chai, which carried a very heavy cinnamon note, and the Chocochaud, which was quite disappointing as it tasted more like a watery version of a Milo drink rather than the rich, creamy hot chocolate expected. On the food side, two 8-inch slices of cookie pizza ($38 each) were sampled: the Triple Chocolate, featured milk and dark chocolate couverture with chocolate crunch, and the Black & White, which combined a sugar-free sesame paste with mochi. While both offered a rich, buttery base, the heavy flour and butter quickly created a dense feeling of fullness after just a few bites, and the mochi in the Black & White slice was virtually undetectable. Overall, while the setting offers plenty of unique charm, the culinary execution falls short of its price tag. Meal type: Other Price per person: $50–100
