You won’t get haute cuisine nor 5-star maître’d pampering here. If you dislike impatience and a good dash of classic-HK brashness then avoid Chopsticks Kee. I would walk by Chopsticks Kee almost everyday, some 50m from the hotel where I stayed. It looked interesting—a small, crowded and seemingly old school restaurant in Central area that has blossomed with modern restaurants. There was always a good crowd at lunch and dinner, so despite having read some recent bad reviews on Google dishing Chopsticks Kee, I decided to plunge into the depths of Chopsticks Kee-hell, to experience it myself. Quite the opposite—I got Chopsticks Kee heaven! This is a 車仔麵 (loosely translated into Push Cart Noodles) restaurant—when noodles were sold by street hawkers on push carts back in the heydays of HK. Unlike those who dished Chopsticks Kee, I was welcomed, seated, was not rushed, and chose broad egg noodles, dry, and the ingredients that I desired (chicken wings, curried radish, blanched iceberg lettuce and deep fried pork chop), sat and waited, and hoped for the best. Yes—there was a lot of loud bantering between a commanding but friendly Uncle (owner?) and the service attendant Aunties. Hard of hearing they were perhaps, though seemingly aggressive, but all in jest. I was served the wrong noodles—rice vermicelli came instead, but I didn’t mind. My plate of dry noodles in signature soya sauce was OK. The ingredients were all well done. The sticky gooey sauce that I requested after and a teaspoon of the chilli oil condiment brought things to another level. A big shout out to the deep fried pork chop cut in smaller pieces. Deep with Umami, and tender to the bite. No dried parts. It was the cheapest meal I had in HK—my bill totalled HKD 58, with a glass of iced milk tea. I loved every single minute at Chopsticks Kee—there was life in this restaurant. As I was leaving I thanked them, and they returned with thanks, and “please do come again” rung from the rear of the small restaurant. Overall, a grand experience.
