We were really looking forward to visiting Club Lago and our first impressions justified our sense of anticipation. Set in a very impressive private resort we cleared security at the main gate and were directed to parking directly outside the Club Lago main entrance - very handy. The restaurant and terrace is situated on the first floor and has panoramic views across the infinity pool and a feature lake, beyond which is a housing development, still under way by the looks of things. We enjoyed pre dinner drinks on the terrace for some 60-70 minutes, being very well looked after by our hostess and put under no pressure to take our table - and then the rains came! Like a well oiled machine everywhere was locked down, canopies and umbrellas up, soft furnishings quickly relocated. This certainly wasn’t a one off, the Lago team know their jobs very well! ️ And so to dinner. We were a group of 5 and we all ate quite grandly. The dishes presented were pleasant, they look good, but in terms of taste they were passable rather than being really great or even superb. Everything was kind of well, just O.K. - if you get my drift. At the end of the day, I’ve scored Club Lago down on the food, nothing else. The setting is gorgeous, the service impeccable, the sequence of al fresco pre dinner drinks followed by dinner in a beautifully appointed dining room made for a lovely evening (and we were there for 4 hours!) however, a vital component, especially when considering the cost, was somewhat average. The all important food! Of negative note was the whole chicken, looks and sounds great in the menu, looks awful when presented (see photo with caption) and was oh so dry. The fish too, 800 baht and far too dry. Of note however and I feel that in fairness to the restaurant owners that I must point this out, was the special wine offer which saw us buy 2 x bottles of Montepulciano d'abruzzo red wine for just 900 baht a bottle - way cheaper than the fare on the main menu which started at 2500-3000 baht a bottle. So that 1800 baht expenditure (plus 5-6 beers at another 1k baht or so) does need to be factored in to reflect overall DINING value for money, as by removing the alcohol it takes the food cost down to c. 1000 baht per head, which really isn’t so bad. So, with everything else spot on for quality, the venue needs to focus a little more on the food offerings - and then, Club Lago would surely be a solid 5 venue.
