ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING EXPERIENCE — COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FROM STAFF I rarely write reviews like this, but what happened to my wife and me tonight at Coco Tam’s was so unacceptable that I feel people should know about it. Coco Tam’s is supposed to be one of Koh Samui’s most famous places — somewhere you go to relax on the beach, have a drink, enjoy some casual food and shisha, and watch the fire show. Unfortunately, our evening turned into one of the most unpleasant hospitality experiences we have had. From the beginning, the service felt extremely strange. As soon as we placed our first order, the waiter immediately came and asked us to pay. We were honestly shocked. We were sitting at our table, clearly spending the evening there, yet we were treated as though we might disappear without paying. Nevertheless, we paid immediately and decided not to make an issue of it. Later, we ordered another Singha beer. Immediately after the fire show finished, a waiter named Tim came to us demanding payment for that single beer. At that moment, I was in the middle of a conversation with my wife. I simply and politely asked him, “Please, can you come back a little later for the payment?” His reaction was absolutely unbelievable. He suddenly became extremely aggressive, turned red and shouted at me: “YOU PAY NOW OR I WILL “ “YOU WITH THE POLICE.” Yes, these were the words used by a member of staff toward a paying customer. My wife and I were completely shocked. We had never refused to pay. We had already paid our previous bill immediately when requested, and I had simply asked him to come back later because I was speaking with my wife. There is absolutely NO situation in a supposedly professional hospitality establishment where a waiter should threaten and insult a guest like this. We immediately went to management to report what had happened. I also asked to take a picture of the waiter so that I could properly identify the person involved in such a serious incident. Strangely, we were then told that Tim had already “left.” Given how quickly this happened, I personally found that extremely difficult to understand. What makes this even worse is that we came to Coco Tam’s expecting a fun, relaxed evening at one of Samui’s best-known venues. Instead, we were treated with suspicion from the beginning and ultimately shouted at, insulted and threatened with the police over the payment of ONE BEER — a payment we had never refused to make. This is not simply “bad service.” Bad service is a forgotten order, a long waiting time, or an inattentive waiter. Threatening a customer and using language such as “I will “ “with the police” crosses a completely different line. I have spent many years working in the luxury hospitality industry myself, and I cannot imagine a member of staff speaking to a guest this way without the incident being treated extremely seriously by management. Coco Tam’s may have a beautiful location, a famous fire show and hundreds of tourists every evening, but none of that excuses treating customers with this level of disrespect and aggression. Management should seriously investigate this incident and the behavior of this employee. We came to enjoy an evening on the beach. We left feeling shocked, humiliated and disgusted by the way we were treated. For such a famous establishment in Koh Samui, this was an absolutely disgraceful experience.
