This morning, I walked into the coffee shop to get some coffee. I greeted the lady at the counter politely, saying “sa wad dee ka,” and guess what? I was given an unpleasant look, as though I had done something wrong. Fine, I waited for the man in front of me to finish paying for his order. Then I looked at the lady again and tried to greet her, but she looked at me as if she was insulted by my presence. I mentioned “coffee – cappuccino,” and was about to say "hot" when the lady rudely asked, “What do you want?” When I say rudely, I mean it. I asked her why she was so rude and then left the bakery. No, I’m not being petty. It’s not my first year living and working in Chiang Mai as a teacher, and I have great respect for Thai people and Thai culture. I didn’t raise my voice and was dressed appropriately. We all go through tough days from time to time, but that doesn’t give us the right to treat others inappropriately or act entitled.
