My relationship with granola started back in my teens and has followed me right through to my 50s. For the longest time, my supply came from the usual suspects; the supermarket shelves of Cold Storage or Fairprice Finest. It was fine, but it never quite hit the mark. My standards were irrevocably ruined during the decade I spent living in the United States. Between university and my early career, I lived in what I can only describe as "granola heaven." In the States, fresh granola is ubiquitous. You will find it in almost every bakery and independent shop, not just tucked away in the cereal aisle. I remember a particular diner in the town where I lived that served their own homemade, freshly baked granola. You could eat in or take it away, and they would weigh it out into those classic brown paper bags. They had at least six different varieties, and they even turned those same flavours into incredible granola bars. It was rustic, fragrant, and entirely addictive. When I finally moved back to Singapore, I was hit with a serious craving that I simply couldn’t satisfy. The truth is, once you have experienced the real thing, the mass-produced, boxed varieties from the supermarket just don't cut it. Unfortunately, our local food culture hasn't quite embraced granola as a staple meal; most people here see it as a light snack rather than a main course, which makes finding a specialist shop incredibly difficult. My discovery of Dearborn was a complete happy accident. I wasn’t even looking for cereal; I was actually on a pilgrimage to find Nylon Coffee (being a bit of a coffee nerd as well). I had hopped off the bus and was weaving through the HDB blocks of Everton Park when I passed a small shop. Suddenly, it hit me—that unmistakable, toasty, honeyed scent of baking oats. I stopped in my tracks. Through the shopfront, I saw rows of neatly packaged bags. My first thought was that it couldn't possibly be a shop dedicated solely to granola. In Singapore, that is a risky business model! Granola is a perishable product; if it’s not fresh, the oils in the nuts turn rancid within a couple of weeks. I assumed it was just another trendy bakery, and since I was so focused on my coffee quest, I didn’t pop in. But that scent lingered in my mind for days. Driven by curiosity, I eventually turned to Google, searching for "freshly baked granola" and "Everton Park." Up popped Dearborn. I spent ages browsing their website, kicking myself for not knowing about them sooner. I had found my coffee at Nylon, but now I had a new mission. I decided to start with a pack of their Dark Chocolate Hazelnut and Sea Salt. I am always hesitant to write a review after just one bite; I wanted to live with it for a bit to see if it truly measured up to my standards. I am delighted to report that it didn't just meet them, it exceeded them. The difference is all in the freshness. There isn’t a hint of stale, oily aftertaste that plagues supermarket brands. To cater to a more refined palate, Dearborn has dialed back the sugar significantly. But don't let my "less sweet" remark fool you; they make up for it with an incredibly bold, toasty depth. The intense roasting brings out the natural sweetness of the oats and the buttery nuttiness of the hazelnuts, while the sea salt provides a brilliant sparkle that cuts through the rich dark chocolate. It is, quite simply, the best granola I have had in years. Quality like this does come at a premium, with prices at $16 for 260g or $28 for 500g. However, I am more than happy to pay for it. Here, you are paying for the integrity of the ingredients. I urge you to give Dearborn Granola a try. Who knows? You might find yourself converted, swapping your usual dinner for a wholesome, nourishing bowl of granola. And if anyone from Dearborn is reading this - please consider making granola bars! In a city as busy as Singapore, having that kind of quality on the go would be an absolute game-changer. Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: $10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
