I came here with long time friends I haven't seen in 3 decades, only to be told we used to come to 金師傅's restaurant back in the 90s before or after clubbing in Lan Kwai Fong. This little Shanghainese spot is a labor of love for 金師傅, who used to be chef at some of the most prestigious Shanghainese restaurants in Hong Kong (back in the 80s and 90s) before he opened his own place (he had 5 but SARS and COVID affected his business so much so that he now only has this location). He currently runs this place with his son and the food is authentic! And how do I know? Because I'm Shanghainese and have been eating this food my entire life! This is comfort food! Dumplings, wontons, noodles, and my favorite appetizers: mock goose and 馬蘭頭 (kalimeris indica) a vegetable I love so very much, minced up with dried tofu and tossed with salt and sesame oil. You can only get this at Shanghainese restaurants and even so, in the West, it is hard to come by. We got vegetarian dumplings and wontons which were both good. We also got some Dan Dan noodles which was a pretty substantial bowl. I want to try the Zha Jiang noodles next. 金師傅's son speaks superb English so by all means stop by and grab some food. When you arrive you'll see a huge line next door. Do not be swayed by the illusion of a crowd. Dumpling Yuan is the real deal!
