What is the taste of coffee made by a national champion barista? — HEBE Coffee in Pildong If you walk toward Namsan from Chungmuro, the back gate of Dongguk University (toward Pildong), or the famous Pildong Myeonok, you will find HEBE Coffee on the 1st floor of Nakwon Building—a place where you wouldn't normally expect a cafe to be. Finding HEBE while searching for a new roastery cafe over the weekend, I learned that the owner-barista is Lim Ji-young, a national champion barista. The space is larger than expected, and the birch wood tables create a clean, minimalist impression. Though compact, there is also an outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying the weather this time of year. We ordered an Americano, a Latte, and a slice of Chestnut Cheesecake as a side, and in conclusion, everything was exceptional. For the coffee, we chose beans with acidity, which delivered a remarkably balanced profile of bright acidity, subtle body, and complex aromatics. The Chestnut Cheesecake, however, was the true highlight of the day. The rich chestnut flavor, smooth whipped cream, and cacao nibs combined to create a delightful sweetness along with a perfectly crisp yet creamy texture that instantly captivated the palate. If I had to pick today's star, it would undoubtedly be this Chestnut Cheesecake. Unlike many cafes I’ve visited recently, the staff's passion and warm hospitality truly stood out. I read that "Hebe" refers to the Greek goddess of youth (https://www.hebecoffee.kr/about)—and judging by the attitude and energy in the staff's eyes, the name couldn't be more fitting. A lovely little café tucked away near Chungmuro Station. The space is beautifully designed, with a warm and stylish atmosphere that makes it an easy place to linger. The jazz playing in the background adds just the right touch — relaxed, sophisticated, and never too loud. What really stood out, though, was the coffee and desserts. Their speciality coffee was genuinely impressive, and the desserts were every bit as memorable. You can tell there’s a real attention to detail in what they serve. It’s also incredibly convenient, being just a short walk from Chungmuro Station. A charming spot for a quiet afternoon, a good cup of coffee, and a little bit of jazz. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Other Price per person: ₩1–10,000
