The negitoro kaisen don was exceptional, there was fresh fish, perfectly cooked rice and crispy tempura bits which brought the bite together. Price was decent, but bowl was a little small, I could probably eat 2 by myself. They gave free tea, miso soup and a fish radish appetizer. The place is slightly cramped, with few seats and everybody is very close to one another. Atmosphere was really nice though. I would go again! Do note that if you go even 15 minutes after opening, there will be a line. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $20–30 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

But my recent visit to Hana-hana Japanese Restaurant has firmly ended that hunt. This cozy spot delivers an experience that is as delightful for the eyes as it is for the wallet, proving that quality and quantity can indeed coexist. Atmosphere and Setting: Dinner with a Show Hana-hana maintains a truly intimate and engaging setting. All the seating is arranged at a bar counter, which immediately creates a dynamic and immersive dining experience. You get a clear, front-row view of the chefs meticulously preparing your meal, a true testament to the transparency and craftsmanship of Japanese cuisine. The ambience here is lively and unique, enhanced by a wonderfully surprising choice of background music: popular anime songs. This fun, playful touch injects an unexpected dose of otaku culture, making the whole dining experience feel incredibly welcoming and fresh. Food and Drinks: Generosity is the Main Course The sheer generosity of the kitchen is the true star of the show here. We started with the special chirashi don of the day and the regular Bara Chirashi Don. To begin, the complimentary offerings set an immediate positive tone. Diners are treated to a free flow of water, soup, and appetizers to start. The complimentary ice green tea is a refreshing touch, and the white radish appetizer was surprisingly delicious. The star of the small plates, however, was the Beef Tataki Bara at $17. The beef was incredibly soft and tender, easily making it my favorite item of the entire meal and an absolute must-try. The Chirashi Dons The fish in the special chirashi don was noticeably fresh, a solid foundation for any premium sushi or sashimi meal. The Bara Chirashi Don was an absolute steal at $16 (totaling $19.20 with GST and service charge). The kitchen is incredibly generous with the servings, particularly the fish. The bowl featured an adequate ratio of raw scallops, tuna, and salmon cubes, all topped with beautiful, large pearls of salmon ikura. It stands out as one of the most substantial bara chirashi I’ve encountered at this price point. While the freshness and taste earned a respectable 4/5 rating and were definitely above average, a small amount of extra seasoning or a more vibrant umami kick would take it to the next level. Despite this minor point, the portion size is so substantial that you are happily left with a good amount of fish even after finishing all your rice. That said, the flavors can become a touch monotonous towards the end without the help of a light soy or wasabi combination to break the richness. Service and Value: An Absolute Steal The service at Hana-hana is efficient and clearly focused on the customer experience. The fact that the restaurant provides such a generous volume of food and includes free starters and soup speaks volumes about their commitment to value. I was very happy with the meal and felt the $1.60 service charge was entirely justified. Every item we ordered was decently priced and fair, making it an easy recommendation for anyone dining on a budget without compromising on the quality of the main ingredient.
