If you want a break from the busy streets of Chiayi, Hinoki Village is like stepping into a peaceful Kyoto neighborhood. It’s the best-preserved Japanese colonial-era village in Taiwan, made entirely of aromatic cypress wood. The Vibe: Little Japan Walking through the 29 restored wooden cottages feels incredibly authentic. You’ll find Zen gardens, pebble paths, and traditional sliding doors. It is the perfect spot for photos, especially if you visit the Kimono Rental shop to dress up for your walk. The Highlight: Matcha Ice Cream You can't leave without visiting Morikoohii (森 咖啡) or one of the specialized dessert stalls for their famous Matcha treats. • The Experience: Their Matcha soft serve is rich, earthy, and not too sweet. Many places serve it with red bean and chewy warabi mochi. • Price: Expect to pay around NT120 – NT160 for a high-quality Matcha sundae or cone. Helpful Stuff to Know • Admission: Entry to the village grounds is free. • Timing: Shops are open from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
