Located just off Highway 199, this restaurant was one of the happiest surprises of our trip. We were driving from southern Taiwan toward the center of the island, passing through several small villages while looking for a place to have lunch. We couldn't find anything, there was hardly anyone on the streets, and those we met didn't speak any English. Then, just north of the junction where Highway 199 continues north, we noticed several local cars turning into a parking lot. On impulse, we followed them and we're so glad we did. The restaurant is simple and open, with several large tables designed for families and groups. Since this is far from the usual tourist route, the menu is entirely in Chinese, and no one speaks English. But this is Taiwan, where people are incredibly kind and helpful. We looked at what the other diners were eating, pointed at dishes we liked, and with plenty of smiles, gestures, and help from both the waitress and the local customers, we managed to place our order. We ordered two salads, shared a noodle soup with vegetables and pork, and each had a main course. I honestly can't remember exactly what the main dishes were, but everything was generous, freshly prepared, served steaming hot, and absolutely delicious. The total bill for two people was around USD 20, making it outstanding value for the quality and quantity of the food. We were delighted to discover that this restaurant is listed on Google Maps. It was definitely worth the spontaneous stop, and it's exactly the kind of authentic local place that makes traveling through Taiwan so rewarding.
