On the night of January 16th, after midnight, I was walking through Kyoto with a 20 kg suitcase and a large backpack, heading from Kyoto Station to my hotel, where I was staying for only one night. My phone ran out of battery, so I entered a bar simply to ask if I could charge it. I did not intend to drink, but to avoid being rude, I ordered a 600-yen orange juice. While my phone was charging, I checked my hotel address, and when it reached 3 % battery, I was ready to leave. When I asked to pay by card, the bartender told me that only cash was accepted. As a French traveler who has studied in Australia and China and traveled widely, I assumed—reasonably, in a city like Kyoto—that card or Apple Pay would be accepted, especially since it was written on the door that cards were allowed. I did not carry cash or my physical card for this reason. I tried multiple solutions in good faith: asking to contact my hotel to put the drink on my bill, offering to go to the nearest 7-Eleven to find help, or to compensate them in another way. All proposals were refused, and I was not allowed to leave. Since I had no Japanese SIM, I called the police using the bartender’s phone. When the police arrived, my phone battery died again, and I was not allowed to recharge it, which prevented me from using a translator. The police officers did not speak English and only heard the bartender and his wife’s version of events, which falsely suggested that I refused to pay. Despite my repeated requests, I was not allowed to properly explain myself or use an effective translation tool. I was treated as if I were dishonest or immature, questioned about my age and parents, spoken to in a condescending manner, and even mocked. At one point, the bartender behaved inappropriately by touching me, which I reported, but it was ignored. Eventually, the bartender handed me cash so that I could give it to his wife as if it came from me. The police instructed me to apologize and thank them, treating me like a child. They photographed my passport, spoke to me as if I were a criminal, and told me they did not want to hear from me again in Kyoto. I regret that I could not pay in cash, but I genuinely tried every possible solution. Escalating this situation to the police over a 3-euro drink was unnecessary and deeply humiliating. This experience left me extremely disappointed.
