Inspired by opera singer and Tongyeong (통영) local Kim Yong-gwang (김영광), the iconic Ita Lounge cafe recently took home the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA) top award in the 2020 selection. Combining three floors across a total site area of 475 SQM the dramatic building features a mini boutique hotel, concert hall, rooftop terrace and a syphon only speciality cafe. Architect firm eSou, established in 2011, fashioned the design of the building out of a grand piano and took just over three years to finally complete the project in October 2019. Opting for a modern monochrome aesthetic, the building contrasts a bright exposed concrete courtyard with a dimly lit steel corten lined interior. Suitably, the crowing piece of the building is a white “Samick” South Korean grand piano placed in the central enclosure and used daily for concerts by Kim Yong-gwang. Roasting in-house on the ground floor of the building, Ita had the following range of single origin beans available at the time of visiting: 1)Ethiopia Chelba Yirgacheffe G1, Washed Process (De-Caffeine) 2)Ethiopia Rocko Mountain Yirgacheffe G1, Natural Process 3)Peru San Ignacio, Washed Process 4)Indonesia Golden Longberry G1, Natural Process 5)Colombia El Mirador Orange Bourbon, Carbonic Maceration Process
