It is approaching Mid-Autumn Festival season again and this means it is time for mooncakes in Hong Kong. Kee Wah is a traditional bakery that originated in HK in 1938. This has been a local favourite when it comes to seasonal mooncakes, which are sold from early August to the end of the Mid-Autumn Festival in September. Mooncakes are sold individually and in sets sold in decorative tin boxes. Locals buy them for direct consumption at home but also as gifts for friends, families and work colleagues. Traditional mooncakes include a single or double yolk and lotus seed paste. However, there are a variety of alternatives that include red bean paste, date paste with pine nuts amongst others. My personal favourite, is the Desiccated Coconut with lotus seed mooncake, which is delicious eaten as is or heated up for a few seconds in a microwave. In the end, there are several local bakeries where you can try mooncakes in Hong Kong but Kee Wah is a personal top choice. There are branches throughout the city if you want to locate one near your hotel. Check the bakery website or ask the front desk at your hotel. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
