If one likes having meals in the food hawker centres in Singapore, s/he should be interested in having meals in Keung Kee Dai Pai Dong.The food hawker centres there are famous for the native foods of Chinese, Indian, Malays, etc. (usually prepared in their traditional manner), styles and price. "Dai Pai Dong" is translated from the pronunciation a Cantonese name meaning food hawker stall, and the food sold there usually is also prepared in the traditional way. The difference between Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong and the food hawker centre in Singapore is mainly in the physical structure of the centre (stall) that where the 'centres' are built by the government of Singapore with good town planning, whereas Dai Pai Dong stalls become common in early 1900s usually along the roadside around local market areas in Hong Kong without town planning.As economy started to grow in the early 1970s, the Hong Kong Government started some basic planning and intended to raise the general hygiene standard, it stopped issuing / renewing licenses for operation of Dai Pai Dong in addition to the redevelopment of many areas in Hong Kong, the number of Dai Pai Dong reduced tremendously from several thousand to less than 20 in Hong Kong today.Keung Kee is located in Shum Shui Po which is one of the oldest areas (in terms of ages of most residential buildings and the residents living there) and low income group living there, it does not sell expensive foods and the quality of foods is just average, however, I like the dish of Spicy Dried Squid on Ice (冰震土尤) as I would ordered that every time I go there. The reason I like going there occasionally is that I could enjoy the food and the environment there freely without caring one's table manner, and at the same time recalling much of scene of my childhood with my late father!
