料理自体に問題はありませんでしたが、外国人向けメニューに不誠実な価格設定があるように感じました。店側からは、「英語メニューのほうが量が多く、日本語メニューは量が少ない」と説明されました。たとえば白子は、英語メニューでは4切れで1,500円、日本語メニューでは2切れで980円とのことでした。鶏せせりも700円と680円で、店側の説明では英語版のほうが量が多いそうです。私たちが注文した天ぷらは1,500円で貝柱が2個でしたが、日本語メニューの1,280円のものは貝柱が1個なのでしょうか。量が異なるのであれば、そのことをメニューに明記すれば済む話です。それに対して店側は、「外国人に説明するのは大変だから」と説明しましたが、到底納得できるものではありません。さらに、この件について指摘し、店側に説明を求めた直後、突然カード決済端末が使えなくなりました。私たちも十分な現金を持っていませんでしたが、しばらくすると端末は再び使えるようになりました。本当に不可解な出来事でした。正直に言えば、外国人向けメニューそのものは理解できます。国や都市によっては、外国人旅行者への対応にコストがかかり、サービスを維持するのが大変な場合もあるからです。しかし、日本、特にこのように豊かな観光地である京都で、なぜこのように分かりにくい形で料金を分ける必要があるのでしょうか。「外国人のお客様には対応費として10％のサービス料をいただきます」と明記するほうが、まだ正直ではないでしょうか。私はこの8年間、日本のさまざまな都市や地方を訪れてきました。より良い旅行をするために日本語まで勉強してきましたが、まさか日本語が役に立ったのがこのような場面だったとは思いませんでした。このような対応は到底受け入れられません。店側の不誠実な対応は、結果的に日本全体の印象を悪くするものだと思います。 There was nothing wrong with the food itself, but the menu for foreign customers seemed to involve an unfair and insufficiently disclosed pricing system. The restaurant explained that the English menu offers larger portions, while the Japanese menu offers smaller portions. For example, the shirako was listed as four pieces for ¥1,500 on the English menu, compared with two pieces for ¥980 on the Japanese menu. The chicken neck meat was priced at ¥700 on the English menu and ¥680 on the Japanese menu, with the restaurant again explaining that the English-menu portion was larger. The tempura we ordered was ¥1,500 for two scallops. Does that mean the ¥1,280 version on the Japanese menu contains only one scallop? If the portion sizes are different, this should be clearly stated on the menu. The restaurant’s explanation was that explaining this to foreign customers would be too troublesome, which was not convincing at all. After we raised this issue and asked the restaurant to explain, the card payment terminal suddenly stopped working. Coincidentally, we did not have enough cash with us either. However, after some time, the card terminal started working again. The whole situation was extremely strange. To be honest, I can understand having a separate menu or additional charge for foreign customers. In some countries or cities, serving international visitors may require extra resources and effort. But in Japan—especially in a prosperous tourist destination like Kyoto—why hide the difference in such an unclear way? Wouldn’t it be more honest to simply state that foreign customers are charged a 10% service fee due to the additional difficulty of providing service? Over the past eight years, I have visited cities and rural areas all across Japan. I even studied Japanese in order to travel more easily. I never expected that the moment when my Japanese would prove useful would be in a situation like this. This kind of conduct is extremely difficult to accept. The restaurant’s lack of transparency has unfortunately damaged my impression of Japan as a whole. 【2026年9月11日更新】店主の返信は、依然として私の疑問に正面から答えておらず、「英語メニューと日本語メニューでは量が異なる」という説明を繰り返しているだけです。しかし、これはまさに、2種類のメニューで価格と量が異なっているにもかかわらず、メニュー自体にはその違いが明確に記載されていないことを示しています。私が問題にしているのは、価格が高いか安いかではありません。外国人客が、店主から事後的に説明されて初めて、自分が見たメニューと日本語メニューで料理の量が異なることを知るのはなぜなのか、という点です。量が異なるのであれば、メニュー上で明確に表示すべきです。そもそも、本当にやましいことがないのであれば、なぜ価格を白く塗りつぶして消した英語メニューをわざわざ掲載するのでしょうか。【Update: September 11, 2026】. The owner’s reply still does not directly address my concern. It merely repeats the explanation that “the portions on the English menu are different.” However, this essentially confirms that the two menus have different prices and portion sizes, while the menus themselves do not clearly explain this difference. My concern is not whether the prices are high or low. The issue is why foreign customers have to receive an explanation after the fact before learning that the portions on the menu they were shown are different from those on the Japanese menu. If the portions are different, this should be clearly stated on the menu. Besides, if there is truly nothing to hide, why would the restaurant upload an English menu with the prices whited out? この様なクチコミは、初めてで非常に残念です白子イングリッシュメニュー1500円日本語メニュー1280円カット数が違いますホタテの天ぷらイングリッシュメニュー1200円日本語メニュー1280円仕入れ価格、サイズ、時期によって値段は、多少変わりますイングリッシュメニューは、平均的な値段設定で、高く感じる料理や、安く感じる料理が有ると思います。しっかりと値段比較してからコメントして欲しいです。またご来店して頂き確認して欲しいです
