I must express my profound disappointment with Mei Fang Chicken Rice, although I rarely find myself leaving negative reviews. Let me provide some context: having recently relocated to Katong, I stumbled upon this chicken rice establishment at a local coffee shop while exploring my new neighbourhood around 2pm. Opting for a plate of chicken rice with extra chicken and a braised egg, I recall being charged either $5 or $5.50, the exact amount escapes my memory. Initially, it seemed like a steal, considering the scarcity of satisfying meals within the $5 price range in Katong. However, my enthusiasm was short-lived. The chicken lacked flavour, bordering on tasteless, and the rice, devoid of any hint of the chicken's essence, was egregiously dry. While the chicken itself was tolerable, it failed to reach the pinnacle of tenderness. The saving grace was the flavorful soup and the inclusion of vegetables. Based solely on the quality of the food, I would generously rate it a mere 3 out of 10. Setting the food aside, the proprietors of the establishment were exceptionally pleasant during my initial visit. Consequently, I harboured intentions of returning for an economical meal, an inclination that led me back today. Opting for the same order as before, I was perplexed to find myself charged $7 this time around. Attempting to inquire about the discrepancy, I was met with a lack of comprehension from the owners. In conclusion, while Mei Fang Chicken Rice may have its merits in terms of affordability and amiable service, its culinary offerings fail to justify a return visit. I hope that this feedback serves as constructive criticism for the improvement of their fare and pricing consistency. However, I won't see myself ever returning as it really is a below-average chicken rice (ignoring my experience today) in Singapore and I honestly have no idea why there are many reviews and blogs online that patronize this place.
