Modern Toilet Restaurant in Taipei is exactly what it sounds like, and committing to the bit fully is the only way to approach it. The entire space is designed around a bathroom theme from top to bottom, with toilet bowl seats, sink tables, poop shaped lanterns, and tiled mosaic walls that make it clear the concept is taken seriously as a dining experience rather than just a cheap gimmick. Walking in through the decor downstairs and ascending into the main dining area, the execution is thorough enough that it genuinely earns a laugh rather than just a groan. The food is served in miniature toilet and bathtub shaped dishes which is part of the charm, and it holds up better than the setting might lead you to expect. The hotpot is a solid order and the portions are generous enough to make the meal feel substantive rather than just a novelty stop. The chocolate ice cream served in its signature presentation is the most photographed item on the menu and tastes as good as it looks ridiculous, which is the right balance for a place like this. The atmosphere is lively and works particularly well for groups or families, the kind of dining experience that generates conversation throughout the meal and gives you something to talk about long after. It is clean and well maintained despite the theme, which matters more than it might seem going in. A couple of practical things worth knowing before you go: there is a one dish per person minimum so planning to share a single plate between two people is not an option, and the restaurant is cash only so coming prepared saves the hassle.
