The stir-fried Xin Zhou mee hoon was quite tasty and full of flavor. The char siew fried rice was rather average, and I was a bit surprised that all their chee cheong fun dim sum was out of stock, which was disappointing for a dim sum restaurant. Overall, the dim sum itself was also fairly average. Price per person: $20–30 Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3

In the days of my youth, I would travel around Singapore in search of the "Holy Grail": a plate of Horfun with intense wok hei. So whenever I read reviews of horfun with wok hei, I will be there to eat it, whether in Woodlands or Shenton Way, whether in Changi or Jurong. Come rain or shine. My experience was a bit of hit and miss. Some places had reasonably good wok hei, living up to the hype. In other places, you need to shut both eyes and block out all the surrounding noise in order focus all your mind to taste the wok hei, leaving me empty and feeling cheated. I am very happy to report to you that I have found my "Holy Grail", and it is in my neighbourhood! When I ordered their black bean beef horfun ($8), I told the waiter that I wanted extra wok hei. I was not disappointed. The wok hei from Mongkok Dim Sum's black bean horfun was the most intense that I have ever tasted. I don't say this lightly. It elevated the plate of black bean beef horfun to the celestial heights! It is exactly what I had spent a large portion of my life looking for: wok hei that is so intense, even a person with defective taste buds will say that the wok hei is obvious. It was so good that I had to ask the waiter who the chef was, just to feedback in person that this is the best black bean beef horfun I had ever eaten! Wok hei lovers, please give this a try.
