While staying in the Dongdaemun area, we decided to try samgyetang at this restaurant after seeing its reasonably good online reviews and is conveniently located. We arrived about 45 minutes before closing time, and the lady at the restaurant allowed us to dine in provided we weren’t spend too long. The menu offered several varieties of samgyetang along with a few other dishes. A half size chicken samgaetang was also offered in the menu which is handy for small eaters. We ordered the standard samgyetang, which was simple yet very enjoyable. The broth was flavorful and comforting, and the chicken was tender and well-cooked. Unfortunately, while the food itself was good, the service was below average and at times unpleasant. I also had some concerns regarding hygiene practices. Three side dishes—kimchi, radish kimchi, and pickled garlic—were served in small ceramic pots placed on the table. Separate serving spoons were provided inside each pot, and customers were expected to serve themselves. While this system may be convenient for the restaurant, sharing communal side-dish containers raises hygiene concerns if not properly managed. During our meal, I noticed a nearby customer using her own spoon, which had just been in her mouth, to take side dishes directly from one of the communal pots. There were no signs instructing customers to use the serving spoons, and the staff made no effort to correct the situation. Additionally, when a customer seated next to us requested more kimchi, a staff member simply took the kimchi pot from our table and gave it to them without asking us first. I also witnessed a foreign traveler attempting to pay with Alipay. The staff member at the counter responded in a very abrupt and somewhat rude manner. As Korean is my native language, I understood the conversation. The customer appeared to be around 50–60 years old, yet the staff member spoke to her as if she were a small child. I may be mistaken, and I apologize if that is the case, but I also suspected that MSG may have been used quite heavily in the broth, as I experienced the same reaction I sometimes get after consuming foods with a high MSG content. Overall, the food was tasty, and I can understand why the restaurant receives positive reviews for its samgyetang. However, due to the poor service, questionable hygiene practices, and overall dining experience, I would not choose to return.
