It's not easy looking for places where local Thais go, so we had to rely on what Google reviews tell us. Oddly, this Friday night, there were more non-Thai foreigners dining at NSR than locals, so all the food that we had ordered for ourselves didn't taste Thai. Nor, did the food we ordered hit the mark. Since it's called the Noodle Soup Restaurant, I would have thought the noodle soup at NSR would be outstanding, or would at least mirror most of the good reviews that I had read. Unfortunately, after tonight's dinner, I became one of the dissidents of NSR. My Tom Yum Noodle Soup was below average. It arrived lukewarm, the Tom Yum taste was weak and the Sen Lek noodles were undercooked and floury in texture. Although probably factory made (and nothing wrong with that), the fish balls, and fish and meat cake were dull. The single piece of Wanton was thick and uninteresting. Unfortunately, the dried chilli flakes, vinegared chillies and fish sauce most Thais would normally add, as did I, failed to and could not save what was already inherently below average. Next, the unappetizing looking 300 THB plate of roasted duck and crispy pork combo arrived. The shredded raw white cabbage and red-purple cabbage, and slithers of cucumber were proportionally more than the meat. The pork meat was dry. The duck was just plain average... The Kangkong was OK. Nothing to shout about. The egg omelette was average, slightly runny in parts with small chunks of fresh tomatoes and partially undercooked onions thrown in. I've never had a Thai egg omelette like that before, and certainly not an undercooked one. Understandably, we only finished the part of the egg that was fully cooked, and weeded out the undercooked onions too. The only good thing tonight, and the only I give for food was the Gaeng Keow Wan Gai (Chicken Green Curry), presented in a retro Asian enamel pot. Although more watery than a drippy thickish curry, the chicken was well-cooked and the Thai baby eggplant was still crunchy and not soggy to the bite. Food aside, the service was excellent. Everyone was extremely polite and gracious, and attentive. However, it's not enough to make us want to return for a second try this trip to Phuket.
