After living in Chiang Mai for some time, I eventually decided to visit Ostinato Bar to experience the space for myself. After spending a few nights there, a dynamic became hard to ignore. The music, much of it rooted in Black culture, fills the space, yet as a Black person I could clearly feel that my presence was different from the regular crowd. During my time there, I began noticing subtle reactions and moments of discomfort from some people around me. At one point I even expressed interest in a Korean bartender, and the response quickly turned into a situation where I felt like the joke rather than someone being taken seriously. Experiences like this raise an uncomfortable question: why do some spaces embrace Black culture so easily, yet seem uneasy when Black people themselves are present? That contradiction was difficult to ignore during my time at Ostinato Bar. Price per person: ฿1,400–1,600 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 1
