Where to begin? If you love cuteof the handcrafted variety, this is the place for you. Virtually everything you see in her papingsu cafe is her original creation, or has her hand in it at the very least. Her colored pencil drawings of plants and flowers are truly works of art and she is proud to show catalogues from exhibits where her work has been featured, and even a calendar featuring her work in the month of August. Oh yes, and about the papingsu! My wife and I shared the traditional papingsu with macha powder as the only ingredient that represents a more modern iteration of the dish. She boils the beans for hours in the traditional bronze caldron that can be seen beneath the counter, a process that imparts to the beans their special character. As she uses only natural ingredients, and much less sugar than many places you can really taste the delicious naturalness of the beans themselves. I’m a huge fan! (But I’m also a fan of pure, rich coffee without any additives such as milk or sugar, let alone any flavorings—taste is personal, not a right or wrong. But in this case, I’m right! ) Finally, as others have said, the owner is friendly, and if engaged in conversation about Jeju as it was thirty or more years ago, or on the subject of art and the many offerings here on the island of Jeju, she is a font of knowledge, and seems to love sharing it with others. Oh, and don’t miss the tiny nook in the back devoted to the kind of shoes most people wore thirty years and more ago on the is island. It’s a very cute space where you can sit on cushions on the floor and enjoy your papingsu in total privacy with a couple of friends, should you wish to do so. Discovering this dessert shop by accident and was very happy to find Bingsu - red bean in shaved ice and mochi and a tinge of tangerine that Jeju island is famous for. It is hard to describe the complex taste of red beans, mochi and tangerine mixed together. Definitely not to be missed when in Jeju. I can’t stop eating. This is heavenly. Marvellous.
