Last night we had dinner for two at Penna Moon Garden in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, which presents itself as a “Modern Italian Kitchen.” Let’s start with the most important thing: the food. Using high-quality ingredients like extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar doesn’t automatically mean serving good Italian food, even if it’s a modern twist. For example, the appetizer was ridiculous: a dish with oil and balsamic vinegar served with a small cube of bread and a cracker. The only dish we liked was the arugula and cherry tomato salad with burrata and balsamic vinegar, but unfortunately, the positive judgment ends here. The Neapolitan pizza was small, overbaked, poorly leavened, and heavily sprinkled with garlic to an excessive degree. What they call “Carbonara” was actually American-style macaroni and cheese with three large pieces of fried pancetta carelessly placed on top. Oveall The use of salt was beyond acceptable, and garlic was overwhelming. All this for a very high price: 600 HK$ for two people. The service was professional, the dining area spacious, and the atmosphere pleasant thanks to live music. In conclusion, an honest opinion: if you want to eat “Italian” pizza in Hong Kong, Pizza Express is a much better choice if u like wannabe Italian.
