This is the most baffling and disappointing restaurant experience I have ever had. My wife, who is Taiwanese, was parking the car, so my 12-year-old daughter and I went ahead to get a table for three. We thought we could save some time by getting seated and ordering before my wife arrived. I approached the counter and asked for a table. The staff member asked whether I had a reservation. I replied, “No.” After a pause, he asked again, “No?” I again replied, “No.” He then informed me that there was a wait. When I asked how long, he raised both hands and displayed all five fingers on each hand. Thinking I had misunderstood, I asked whether he meant 15 minutes. He again raised both hands and repeated the gesture, making it absolutely clear that he meant 55 minutes, not 15. Fifty-five minutes. Believing that was the genuine waiting time, and not wanting to keep my hungry 12-year-old daughter waiting for nearly an hour, I stepped away. We bought something small to eat while waiting for my wife. A few minutes later, my wife arrived. She spoke to a different member of staff and obtained a table for the very same party. The same restaurant. The same party. The same lunchtime rush. The same day. Yet I had just been told there would be a 55-minute wait. That is what I cannot reconcile. If the waiting time was genuinely 55 minutes, how was a table available a few minutes later? If a table was available, why was I told otherwise? If there was a misunderstanding, why was it never clarified? What stayed with me was not only the contradiction itself, but the manner in which the interaction was handled. There was no effort to communicate clearly, no explanation, and no concern whatsoever for the customer standing in front of them with a child. Later, while the staff member who had quoted the 55-minute wait was cleaning a nearby table, I remarked that, at this rate, we would probably be finished with our meal before the stated waiting time had elapsed. He looked directly at me and said nothing. There was no explanation, no acknowledgement, and not even a simple apology. I can only describe the impression this left on me. I was told to wait 55 minutes, while my Taiwanese wife was able to obtain a table for the same party only a few minutes later. Whether the restaurant believes that perception is fair or not, it is the lasting impression this experience created. Restaurants get busy. Customers understand that. Waiting is part of dining out. What customers do not expect is to be told one thing and then watch reality unfold very differently moments later. Hospitality is not just about serving food. It is about treating people with courtesy, honesty, and respect. Unfortunately, none of those qualities were evident during this interaction. I came in expecting lunch. Instead, I left wondering why I had been told to wait 55 minutes when another member of my own family was able to secure a table only a few minutes later. I will never return. There are countless restaurants that serve good food. The ones people remember are the ones that make customers feel welcome.
