Beautiful art work on the wall for sale in support of artists at Pathlight. Singapore-themed gifts made by home-bound women and senior citizens. A book exchange in one corner so you feed the soul as well as the belly. Home made kaya (coconut jam) for the perfect kaya roti breakfast (with soft boiled eggs perfectly cooked in a made for purpose sous vide like contraption). Coffee to slurp Kopi tiam style. Ahhhh. Qita In The Park is a cafe with a huge heart. A social enterprise supporting marginalised folk, Qita is also where it's at - food wise. I had a most memorable meal there - the chicken curry (accompanied by organic basmati rice and home made achar) is to die for. Having chicken-curried my way round country, I would rank it among the top two (the other one being my Mum's) anywhere. I do not exaggerate. It was here that I had my "Ratatouille" moment there - when the infamous food critic was transported back to his childhood upon his first taste of a ratatouille dish presented to him. In my case, the chicken curry was exactly how my Mum used to slow cook it at home. It brought me back to my childhood. Just four months old, Qita In The Park is unpretentious, welcoming and cosy. It is open for breakfast and lunch and definitely worth a visit. It is directly opposite Park Royal Hotel and just a five minute walk from Raffles Place MRT. It is a 1 minute walk from Hong Lim Green MRT Station. Enveloped in the greenery of historic Hong Lim Green and tucked away in one cosy corner (opposite the other "corner") of the Community Centre, blink and you may miss it but venture in you may think you've left Raffles Place and behind. The cafe looks out into a manicured lawn hemmed in by lovely mature trees and gives the cafe a cool suburban feel. The moment you step into cosy Qita In The Park, you can sense the contagious passion that made the owner Genevieve, leave her job as a lawyer to realise her dream of becoming a social enterprise champion. Ask her about the cafe and the enterprises she champions. Ask her about the origins of the name "Qita" and you will be enriched by its many meanings. Mostly, go and sense the passion and sense the sense of community. I applaud Genevieve for her enthusiasm in helping the marginalised. I want to spread the word so that people know about Qita. It's a cafe just round the corner for all to enjoy regardless of race, language or religion. Back to the chicken curry, the rice was flaky and fragrant, chicken was cooked to perfection using gourmet quality spices and just the right amount of fresh coconut milk....delectable. I'm heading back tomorrow for kaya on toast and next Wednesday for the Organic Macaroni Chicken Soup.
