I’ve known the owner of The Red Onion since we first met in Daegu back in 2010, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since I left Korea in 2013. Over the years, he’s become more than a friend — he’s like a brother to me. He’s one of the most decent, hardworking people I’ve ever known, and I thank God for giving me the chance to meet him, stay connected, and watch his journey unfold. Back when I lived in Daegu, my kids always loved going to his kebab place. Those were some of our happiest family memories between 2010 and 2013 — simple meals, good food, and a warm atmosphere that made us feel at home. My wife even visited one of his restaurants in 2024, and she told me how much everything had grown and improved. Hearing her stories only made me want to return even more. This trip is my first time back in Korea since 2013, and finally walking into The Red Onion felt like a moment I’d been waiting on for years. And it was absolutely worth the wait. The staff welcomed me with genuine smiles the moment I stepped inside — long before they knew I had any connection to the owner. That alone says everything about the heart of this place. And the food… unforgettable. The kind that makes your mouth water before the plate even hits the table. Every bite was rich, flavorful, and satisfying in a way that brought back memories of the old days in Daegu, yet showed just how far he has come. From one small restaurant in 2010 to more than nine thriving locations today — his success is something I admire deeply. Coming back to the Camp Humphreys area was emotional in its own way. I first came here in 1993 as a 22‑year‑old, and the changes since then are dramatic. I’m not sure all of the changes were for the better, but time moves on, and everything evolves. What hasn’t changed is how meaningful it feels to reconnect with people who shaped your life. The Red Onion isn’t just a restaurant to me — it’s a reminder of friendship, family memories, and the journey of someone I respect with all my heart. As a dining experience, it’s one of the most special and memorable I’ve had in a very long time. I’ve been here a few times and I actually enjoy the food if I order and eat it there. Once anything turns cold, it’s no longer good. I feel that way about a lot of foods but delivery from here just doesn’t cut it for me. Service can be a bit slow but there seems to always be a crowd during dinner.
