富堡茶餐廳 captures the unpretentious charm of a classic Hong Kong cha chaan teng, with warm hospitality and genuine human warmth that immediately puts diners at ease. For a solo dinner, I ordered the chicken clay pot with a side of rice vermicelli and a cold drink. The bill came to HK$96. Portions were generously satisfying, and the price is acceptable. The clay pot arrived bubbling in a glossy, savoury sauce. While the flavours were comforting and well-rounded, the dish lacked 鑊氣 — that signature smoky wok aroma from high-heat cooking. The chicken and pork pieces would have benefited from a few extra charred, caramelised edges which would have added welcome depth, texture and that addictive wok-kissed character. The accompanying mi xian proved an unexpected highlight. The thin rice noodles carried their own subtle, well-balanced flavour in a light broth, offering a pleasant springy bite that complemented the pot without being overshadowed by it. Stealing the show, however, were the shiitake mushrooms. These plump little ingredients were the clear star — meaty, tender and saturated with umami. They absorbed the sauce beautifully and delivered the most satisfying bites of the meal. Overall, 富堡 delivers a solid, hearty dinner with big portions and hospitable service in a classic neighbourhood setting. A touch more wok fire in the pot and slightly sharper pricing would push it from good to excellent, but it remains a reliable choice for comforting local fare.
