But if you’re coming from far away and looking for something similar without breaking the bank, you might discover another restaurant that offers a similar treat. If you are in Khao Yai and you ask a tourist where to eat, they will point you to the usual suspects, the places that show up on every overseas blogger's feed and every YouTube travel vlog with a thumbnail of someone making an exaggerated face at food. Rosebay Home cooking Café is not one of those places. And that, my friend, is precisely why you should go. This was our second attempt to have a meal here. The first time previously when we arrived, took one look at the waiting crowd at the door, we walked away defeated. This time we got lucky and scored a table, and suddenly we all happy like bird. The place itself is wonderfully unpretentious. Just a cottage, tables and chairs filling the space, and an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks work their magic over roaring wok flames accompanied by that very satisfying clang clang clang of metal on metal that is basically the soundtrack of all great Asian cooking. Remarkably, despite all that high-heat action and chili hitting hot oil, our eyes did not burn to a crisp. How they managed the fumes in that open kitchen, I have no idea. Must find out brand of kitchen suck air thingy. Now, krapao moo sap (minced pork stir-fried with holy basil) is not an exotic discovery. Every Thai person eats this for lunch on a near-daily basis. It is the rice and chicken of Thailand, the bread and butter, the staple of staples. Normally accompanied by sunny side up, they swap the usual chicken egg for a duck egg. Same concept, very different result. Duck egg yolk is richer, creamier, with a deeper flavor that pairs well with the fiery krapao infused meat in a way a chicken egg simply cannot. After that cholesterol level higher than where Space X rocket go, I don’t care. .. .. . And if the everyday krapao is not exciting enough for you, the menu goes further. Hi-so versions with quality tender beef, portions of crab meat, scallops, cray fish from sea far far away. The kind of ingredients that make you look at the price and then order anyway because some things in life are worth it. The menu alone looks so good you want to eat the menu. We left with a list of things we still want to try, which is always the mark of a good place. One visit is never going to be enough here. If you are heading to Khao Yai, add this to your list. Come on a weekday if you can, come early if you cannot. A solid can come can eat from me. Shoiks!! Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ฿1–200 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

A lovely home cafe in the Khao Yai area that delivers a warm and relaxed atmosphere. The place feels simple, giving a very comfortable and authentic local vibe. The most outstanding part is their a la carte dishes, especially Stir-fried Basil Rice (khao pad krapao). It is truly impressive, simple in presentation but rich in flavor. The balance of seasoning, aroma of holy basil, and the overall execution make it a top of mind dish for this category. One important note: do not rely on Google Maps for navigation. It is better to follow the location provided on the restaurant’s Facebook page to avoid confusion. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ฿1–200 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3
