On our first night in Hakodate, we wanted an easy, stress-free dinner after a long day of travel, so we took advantage of the hotel’s recommendation and reserved a table at Sumi Kitanoji, the seafood robata restaurant located inside Century Marina Hakodate. We were seated in a private dining room while the staff prepared our multi-course meal tableside, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy the evening. The ingredients were fresh, beautifully presented, and highlighted the excellent seafood Hokkaido is known for. While the courses were relatively small and a bit lightly seasoned for our taste, they were thoughtfully prepared and satisfying. The charcoal grills added a traditional touch to the experience, although it could get a little warm at times when standing nearby. The biggest surprise came when the bill arrived. Even after the hotel discount, this ended up being one of the most expensive meals we’ve had during our travels throughout Japan. While we appreciated the quality of the food and service, the final cost seemed steep for the amount of food included and is something future diners may want to keep in mind. Overall, Sumi Kitanoji delivered a memorable dining experience with attentive service, quality ingredients, and a relaxing atmosphere—though at a premium price point. A surprise finding in such a small town like Hakodate! We stayed at Century Marina and opted for including the dinner in room plan. We had two nice dinners in a robata counter in a private room served by a friendly chef. The courses were fully satisfying, which I did not expect in the beginning. Meal type: Dinner Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
