As the chef began preparing the meal, shrimp and shellfish started appearing. We were confused and repeated again that we only eat fish. There was clearly some communication issues between the chef and the waitresses.
After the shellfish was served to us, we had to call the waitress back again to ask for an explanation. At this point, the main chef walked over clearly upset. He then proceeded to tell us that in this omakase set, “a change of more than 4 pieces of sushi is unacceptable”. We told him that we understood the situation, however, we had informed the restaurant upon reservation days ago that we wanted an all fish omakase, which was repeated again to the hostess and acknowledged.
He then said “if you wanted all fish, you should have ordered a-la-carte”, which I think was completely out of line as we ordered based on the guidance of the restaurant waitress.
As someone who has experienced many omakase restaurants in Bangkok, other places are fully accommodating to allergy issues - not only for the satisfaction of a customer paying upwards of 4,000 baht her head, but also for health and safety reasons.
After the exchange with the chef, it was clear that he was not in the mood to continue servicing our table. We then offered to pay for the 3 bites (out of the 15 ordered) and leave, but the restaurant host insisted that we didn’t pay. She apologized and acknowledged that there was a communication issue between the person who took the booking, her team and the chef.
I have never walked out of a restaurant like this and do not want to write a review like this online, but it is important for the management to be aware of an incident like this. It was a very unfortunate experience as we were all very much looking forward to having a nice meal at Sandaime.
