Saruda is such a cute and charming café. The space is beautifully designed — cozy, spacious, and perfect for sitting back with a drink and a slice of cake. The service is excellent, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which makes every visit feel relaxing. Plenty of parking available too, so it’s super convenient. This gourmet bakery and coffee house is a fantastic addition to the culinary scene here in Udon Thani. Of the five desserts we sampled, they were all authentically rich, luxurious, and made with high-quality ingredients; all professionally prepared and served with lovely presentation. We sampled a couple of items that come with the afternoon high tea set. The mini-creme brulee was outstanding, as good as anything I've ever gotten at the finest High Teas served in the world, like at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong or the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok. For example, the creme brulee was generously peppered with bits of vanilla bean and had just the right thickness of burnt sugar crust on top. The pink, gold-flecked macaron was syrupy sweet and redolent of an aroma of something from Indian cuisine, but I can't quite put my finger on it. There are two very distinct seating areas with different interior design themes. Overall, the shop is quite large and could easily accommodate bigger private parties. We chose one of the huge curved booths by the windows simply because Valentine's Day is approaching, and the colors were so vibrant. My dark roast iced Americano cost 98 baht and was appropriately strong, slightly bitter, and stood up very well to the sweetness of the desserts. It was a good combination. The Creme Brulee Tartlett we shared was dense, slightly cinnamony, and was a bit like a creme brulee-meets-cheesecake concoction. It was delicious and cost $159 Thai baht. The Cha Thai Soft Cake at 129 Thai baht was exquisite without being sweet and had the requisite pungent lingering aftertaste of tea. We took home a Blueberry Cheese Pie at 89 Thai baht, which came in a clear, hard plastic ramekin bowl. Not too sweet, we found this dessert to be very satisfying and filling. Saruda is an upscale experience, but actually, the pricing of the desserts is in line with many, many other locations throughout Udon Thani. Luckily, we were able to chat briefly with Saruda, the namesake owner, who is a lovely Thai lady and a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school, Bangkok branch. Her credentials are testimony to the kind of high quality you will find at this beautifully appointed location, which I highly recommend.
