I spent 8 days in Pai recently—my first time in this little mountain town—and while I kept things pretty low-key (just the walking street and Saturday market), I found myself returning to Somboon Thai Food almost daily for lunch. This place isn't trying to be anything other than what it is: a straightforward local spot serving honest Thai food. I never saw another foreigner eating here, which honestly became part of the appeal. The owner recognized me by day three and started greeting me with a smile and a knowing nod about my usual order. The food is exactly what you want when you're actually living somewhere rather than just ticking off a checklist. Everything I tried was well-prepared, flavorful, and generously portioned—the kind of portions that make you wonder how they turn a profit. I'd order pad Thai or Pad see ew, thinking it'd be a light lunch, only to end up genuinely full for hours. What I appreciated most was the lack of pretense. No trendy decor, no "tourist-friendly" menu with pictures, no staff trying to speak English beyond the basics. Just good food, fair prices, and a friendly face who clearly takes pride in feeding people well. If you're spending more than a couple of days in Pai and want to eat where locals actually eat—without the walking street markup—this is your spot. Fair warning: the portions really are massive. Come hungry.
