Hiding inside a quiet residential lane is a magical little café that doesn't want to be found. Its classy black frontage merges with the building it's in, not crying for attention. Discovering Some Time Blue Café is a bit like Harry Potter discovering Hogwarts. It will take you minutes to realize you've stmbled upon a gem. You might even want to keep it secret, lest it gets too crowded. Nan, who dreamed it up nearly 10 years ago, doesn't want it to be the talk of the town. She wants it to feel like a "living room". She wants to serve "heartfelt coffee" — and as a nationally awarded barista who has delivered more than 200 lectures on the nuances of coffee, she is probably the perfect person to craft you a cuppa. Some Time Blue is a café with an unexpectedly diverse menu and surprises on each page. I will have my fill if I visit there at least twice more again — and I will — but in my first visit, I was served a freshly baked, lightly golden brioche with melting butter while I decided what else to eat. I was swept away by the wildly inventive tzatziki and ikura (salmon roe) on an open toasted sourdough bread. Then there was hummus touched by cumin, layered with balsamico tomatillos that Nan cured in their own kitchen. And an open sandwich off tuna with cranberry sauce. What sort of mind would dream that up? The combinations, delightful and unputdownable, all reflect the proprietress's playfulness and creativity in her kitchen. Then there are the cakes, all whimsical because you won't see them on the menu. You will be tempted to buy three and get one free, and I urge you not to resist. I, hardened nemesis of cakes, fell headlong in love with the the lemon-yoghurt cake, crunching with — not sesame or chia — but perilla seeds. Some Time Blue is a neighbourhood café, for locals to lounge in without worrying about the time. The decor is elegant but Bohemian, blending vintage and industrial, with mismatched wooden chairs, carved upholstery, an exposed concrete ceiling with visible ducts, warm wooden flooring and natural light filtered by the greenery outside. At the back is a great little 6-seater meeting room, quite perfect for important, private conversations. Go there soon. Just don't tell too many people about it.
